New forum guy here...

Few years ago I sold my piped 04 z400..., was great trail rider but a little underpowered.

Now I am looking for a new quad and I am trying to decide from a new leftover 14 honda trx450r or a new yamaha 2016 or 2017 yamaha 450. How are the ergonomincs on a 2014 honda 450 compared to the yamaha450? Anyone ridden both? i climbed on top of a 2017 yamaha 450 and felt a little cramped on it.

Ive read that the honda450 is more comfortable than yamahas 450. Are the stock 2014 honda trx450r jetted ok from factory for glammis dunes or 3,700 feet above sea level? I plan on keeping it stock.

I will be doing 90 percent trails and 10 percent dunes. i am like 5 10 or 5 11 218 lbs.

What would you buy if you were in my shoes? Some dealers 2 hours away from me in southern california only have new 14 red honda 450s, no white ones, bummer there. Would you buy a new 14 leftover honda 450 even though it is no longer made? Are most of the kinks and bugs worked out on the 2014 honda 450s?

If i pull the triggggggger on a new leftover 14 honda450 what is a fair deal with an extended warranty from honda total OTD?

Thanks for your opinion guys.

The Yamaha YFZ450 is EFI (Fuel Injected) and is more set up as a Race Bike from factory. I do like the EFI... but also keep in mind EFI if is much more Difficult to figure it out on your own Repair man. Yamaha seems to change stuff very rapidly like their EFI system has had 2 or 3 different Designs now since they came out with the EFI system and to me that is to many Changes to wanna trust in the long run. So the Yamaha would cost you about roughly $10,000.00 brand new with a Warranty....

The Honda TRX450ER from 2006 to 2014 are all the Exact same (Exception of the 2007 to 2014.. head light and other cosmetic changes that's it) other then that the engine is Identical 2006 to 2014. I would say just get a used one... but from the sounds of it you're probably looking for something you know has not been Ripped on hard and has a longer life span which I understand. The TRX450ER's are all Carburetorated with an FCR Carb which in my opinion and many other guys Opinion are much better because they have a lot more Tunability and are a little more simple.. The 06+ TRX450ER has really never had any bad kinks or bugs other then the Starter gear (Which has been updated) no real issues with the TRX450ER. I'd say with the quad and warranty out the door you'd be looking at about $8500.00 with the warranty.

But might I add.... Here is why so many guys choose the Honda...

The 06+ TRX450ER is capable of some Nasty power with some Head work, cam and Exhaust and green wire Mod, it's about $1500 more worth of work... but worth it 100% worth is still barley cost less then the YFZ450.

Best thing to do is Ride a 06+ Honda with some work done to it and then ride a 10,000.00 Yamaha you'll decide fast.
Mind you I don't mean to sound like a Dick if I do but I'm just going off my own Experience.

I MX race a TRX and have ridden YFZRs. In stock form the YFZR is superior, especially for track riding. Like many on this forum, I am a Honda guy and you can't beat the Honda reliability. What's best for you? All depends on what your plans are. If you want to add as little as possible and still keep up with your buddies, go with the YFZR. If you are OK with building up the TRX, then go that route. The TRX jetting will be fine, they are always lean from the factory so they work a little better at higher elevations anyway.

I went with a '14 TRX and I couldn't be happier. Yes, stock for stock, a yfz is better race machine but the trx is a better all around quad. Just like what they both said, throw some extra bucks at it and you'll have a beast on your hands. I had the same debate with myself but I'm glad I chose the trx, I just like how it rides and feels, I can't explain it. I really wanted the tri color but those are unicorns, good luck finding a new one.

Honda all the way. 10 years from now, you'll be posting about how great your Honda still runs. Buy Yamadog, not so much. Good luck.

Buy one as stock and unmolested as possible or prepare to hunt down all the malnourished parts on your quad instead of enjoying it!

I would look up the thread "UNCORKING YOUR TRX ON A BUDGET" thread on here. Its a cost effective/reliable way to wake up your trx from factory. As stated above, the trxs come rather lean from factory to be safe. But its a very nice difference when you rejet, remove baffle, and take off the airbox lid.

The reliability and overall durability of both machines are close. The handling of both machines when properly equipped are awesome. The one major difference between the yfz450r and 450r is power potential after spending 1500-2500 for motor improvements. The TRX is around 60hp give or take whereas the yfz450r hovers around 55hp majority of the time.

I had a '04 Z400(in Kawasaki green) and to me it had plenty of power, but it started having issues and I decided to trade up. I decided to go with a Honda 450ER and I think I made the right choice, although for trail riding I think it needs geared down a little because it is really high geared. I'm about the same height as you and the ergonomics takes a little getting used to after riding my KFX 400 for so many years but after getting used to it,it is fairly comfortable. I'm not here to sway you into picking the Honda 450 over the Yamaha 450 because it all depends on what you want. But I don't think you would be disappointed with a new Honda 450ER.
